Summer 2022

As the temperatures warm up and the snow melts away, the black bears of the Desolation Wilderness step away from their winter work dens to begin their summer routines. This time of year is critical for these incredible creatures as they spend their days eating, getting busy, and raising their adorable cubs.

At Bear Back Riding Co, we believe that it’s important to respect the natural habits of the bears and their young. For this reason, we suspend our Black Bear Traverse Tour between mid-May and October (depending on snowfall). During this time, we want to ensure that the bears have the space and freedom they need to go about their business undisturbed.

While we know this may be disappointing news for those hoping to join us on this adventure, we feel it’s the right thing to do. Our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of both our guests and the bears that call this incredible wilderness home.

Don’t worry though, we have plenty of other amazing tours available during the summer months that will allow you to experience the beauty and wonder of the Tahoe basin and surrounding forests. From guided hikes to mountain biking adventures and more, we’ve got something for everyone.

So, while we may not be offering the Black Bear Traverse Tour during the summer months, we hope you’ll join us on one of our other amazing adventures. And when the snow starts to fall again, we’ll be ready and waiting to take you on an unforgettable bear propelled journey!
